The women and children, they hide.
The men, they see nothing.
Even the war veterans are frightened.
This is Obania, a land torn in two.
This is Obania, a land of hatred, a land of violenece.
This is Obania, a land of Silence.
The Story
The signs posted to the large, stone wall are surprisingly truthful. Obania is only one of many towns in a kingdom called Bassanova, ruled by a powerful man--a king by the name of Faya (fa-i-ah) Abrioles. But there is one thing different about Obania:
It has it's own ruler. For years and years, nearly thirty before our story begins, Briar Santiago has been in charge of the city. One night, the citizens heard rumors of a rebellion. The next morning when the woke, Santiago was in charge and they were unable to send letters or see relatives that lived beyond the stone wall that had sprung up between them and the rest of the world. Armed guards patrol the city streets, mainly around the entrance and exit in the wall (which are one and the same), and have orders to kill anyone they suspect of leaking information out on sight. The guards, however, are in on the escapes. With a promise of a drink, coins, or to deliver a letter to one of their own kin, they will open the gates and allow a citizen out. Once they are gone, they never return.
The Soloists
There was, however, a rebellion against Santiago. They called themselves "Soloists", to confuse the guards and make them think that it was only one person as opposed to the hundred that it actually was. They had larger numbers than the guards', and the latter surrendered easily. The wall was gone, stones missing, the gate busted down. Santiago and his family were killed with only a minor fight, and Santiago almost got away. Almost. So when the denizens awoke the next morning, ten years after they found Santiago in charge, there has been another mini-government change. The Soloists are in charge of the town. For a while, the citizens are free to come and go. Most choose to leave, because in the street fights that took place, buildings were knocked down, set on fire, and generally destroyed. An entire line of shops and houses--Butcher Street--had vanished over night, now home to thieves and runaways that live in the remains. Things were nice in Obania. Until it happened.
Power Corrupts
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely", as we've all heard. And that is what happened to the pure saviors, the leaders, the Soloists. They were corrupted. Guards, again, patrolled the streets. If you were caught leaving, you were killed, often painfully. If you were a woman, you were often played with before death. Freedom of expression is stamped out. The majority of people spend their time at the taverns, drinking away their sorrows. Work has come to a screeching halt, leaving the children of families to do whatever they can to support themselves, their parents, and their siblings. While the sun is bright in the sky almost every day, it feels as though the world is bleak and gray. It seems impossible that there is a way out.
But yet...
The Resistance
There are whispers, and there are the notes that appear under the doorsteps of houses every day. No one sees who delivers them in the dead of night. They are posted outside the wall and inside, in Obania and in other cities. It is the start of a new revolution.
The women and children, they hide.
The men, they see nothing.
Even the war veterans are scared.
This is Obania, a land torn in two.
This is Obania, a land of hatred, a land of violence.
This is Obania, a land of Silence.
"Silence is Golden."
Go to Ye Olde Oak Inn if interested. Ask for room six.
They are never signed, and most never go to see the mysterious 'room six'. Most don't even understand that Silence is a growing rebellion. That Silence is the way out of Obania. That Silence is the way to fair leadership. Most don't even understand that "Silence is Golden" isn't just a saying in Obania.
It's a way of life.
