Tobie wasn't angry with Avery; she didn't blame him at all for how she felt at the moment. Memories came flashing back to her, and her trembling only became worse. When Avery grabbed her arm, however, she was tempted to elbow him in that perfect little nose of his. Rowen had taught her very basic self-defense techniques and she hadn't been tempted to try them out until just then. She jerked her head away from her boyfriend's lips, fighting tears as all the pain from that day hit her.
It had been a sunny afternoon as a few members of the Hemingway family had decided to take a peaceful boat ride, the vessel holding Rowen, October, and Hannah Hemingway, as well as their mother, uncle and older cousin named Joshua. Joshua was having a good time pretending to steer his fathers boat while Tobie and Row sat towards the water, holding onto little Hannah as she giggled and grabbed on to her brother's hair.
"Ouch, Hannah!" "Row, she's only baby!" "I know, but still!"
As Tobie and Rowen began to bicker, their mother cmeoverr to lean over the edge of the boat, relaxing a bit. This was how life should be. Shesmiled as she met eyes with October and wasn't gripping the rail when suddenly the boat rode over a rather large wake...
"No," she replied, looking down, inhaling deeply. Tobie couldn't look at Avery. She just couldn't. Suddenly she felt a familiar sheet of ice coat her heart. "Just...just...Just leave me the fuck alone!" she snarled, tears falling as she turned and stormed away from the lake. No, Tobie wasn't a sailor mouth. She hardly ever swore...
Avery felt Tobie leave his arms, and yell something at him. Uh.. To.. Tob.. Tobie..." His voice was broken, and you could tell that his heart was falling apart already. He wasn't about to let Tobie go though. He had to straighten this out first. How would he be able to sleep if he knew that Tobie was mad at him? He just couldn't it would be impossible! He would be too afraid something would happen to her, like it always did in movies. Whenever someone was mad at someone else, the other person normally died leaving the other feeling guilty, and broken. Avery ran after her once more, this time stepping in front of her. "TOBIE! Please, God, listen to me! Or, tell me what's going on... please!"He begged Tobie. 'What the hell is going on here? I am sooooo confused right now, it's not even funny! Hence why I am not cracking up...' He thought to himself, not letting Tobie pass him. His eyes tried to catch her's but she kept her head down the whole time. This kinda pissed him off. He really wanted to talk to her.

A wave of pain washed over Tobie. True pain. Not just the type that stung for a second, like a papercut or even a scrape on the knee. It was an ebbing, lingering pain that sunk it's claws into her and refused to let go. It injected venom into her veins and made her skin pale. It made her want to collapse and scream and sob at the same time. She needed a tourniquet.
Eyes stinging with tears as she heard her name being repeated, she took in a staggered breath, biting her lip and looking away, not wanting Avery to see her cry. She had promised herself that she was done crying. Only weak little girls cried. She was not weak. She was not some damsel in distress that needed rescuing; she was just Tobie. She needed time alone. Or so she thought. It was just like her to want to run away from her problems, hoping that if she took off fast enough she would be able to shake it off. Make it go away completely.
"Avery...I..." she managed to look up at him, gray eyes glazed with tears. "The reason I don't swim is because..." she took in a deep breath, squeezing out several tears as the closed her eyes. "When I was young...before I even got my Hogwarts letter...my mother died. She drowned, actually...I'm afraid of the water...and when I was pulled under like that...I..." she paused. "It just brought back some bad memories.
