Books, books and more, you guessed it, books. Oh how Lily hated to study, she hated it almost as she hated cleaning house. She frowned down at her Charms book. She slammed it shut, causing many of the other studying kids to 'shush' her. She scowled at them as she grabbed her DADA book. This was her favorite homework, so why not do it now? She began to write and was done in a matter of fifteen minuets. She smiled and went back to her Charms. She sighed, wishing that she could just throw the book at the wall. The small girl picked up her quill, which must have fallen when she was getting her stupid Charms book again. Lily did hate Charms, just the homework. Charms was her favorite class, besides Defense Against the Dark Arts of course. She let her head fall onto the book, her overly red hair sprawling around her. She sighed again, still thinking about hurling the book at the wall.
Rosie'd been reading up in her bed in the Girl's Dormitory. She hadn't read in a long while, as most of her free time these days was spent either with Teddy, or working on her impendingly large mountain of homework, which, for the seventh years, had been getting increasingly larger as the year went on. N.E.W.T.s were later that year, as well as their final O.W.L.s, which were really a relief, as Rosie had been getting sick of tests and exams. She'd already sent her application into St. Mungo's to study as a Practicing Healer once she was out of school, so she really didn't see much use in all this homework.
Of course, the book she was reading was quite fascinating. It was a book that her mother had sent her from home once her parents had heard that she'd applied to St. Mungo's. Knowing her mother, it was the perfect book for someone who planned on being a Practicing Healer later in their life. It was filled with detailed descriptions of common ailments, as well as plenty of healing spells and very intricate pictures of many graphic calamities that could happen to the careless witch or wizard. But, the light in the dormitory was fading, and Rosie's eyes were beginning to hurt, so she put the book away carefully in her trunk and headed down the staircase into the Common Room below.
After hardly a second, she spotted her red-headed cousin, Lily across the room, sitting at a table and looking as annoyed as hell. She walked up behind her, pushing a piece of dark auburn hair behind her ear before leaning over and saying in a sing-songy voice near her cousin's ear: "Someone doesn't look very happy."
Lily had been debating whether or not to give the homework up for the night when Rosie's voice shot in her ear. She jumped off her chair, raising her head up slowly. Her anger was easy to see on her face. "What in the bloody hell was that Rosie?" she asked, a bit too loud. "You think I wanna die form a heart attack at 14?" she said, beginning to laugh. She looked up at her cousin. Pushing a red hair from her face, the girl finally answered the questioned that had been asked. "Yes, but I don't think 'very happy' fits this. I am utterly pissed to tell the truth. I mean, why does Charms have to be so bloody hard?" she questioned.
Rosie grinned at her cousin, straightening up as she did, and again, pushing her hair out of her eyes. Her bangs, which had grown rather long since the last time she'd cut them, were at the length where they continuously fell into her eyes, only to be brushed out of the way a moment later. The cycle repeated quite often. "Charms is bloody easy," she told her cousin in reply to her question, "No shit. It's even easy for me. And THAT's saying something. You just need to work at it. What're you stuck on?" Rosie was always up for giving homework help, especially in her best subject, which was definitely Charms.
Lily gave Rosie a questioning look. "Easy for you. Your freaking smart, Rosie! I, on the other hand, am very stupid." she said grinning. Yes, this was her hardest class. It made her feel terrible, to say the least. She glared at Rosie as she cussed. "Oh, so I get in trouble when I 'back talk' your Slytherin Buddie, but you can cuss? That isn't fair Miss Rosie!" she accused. She smiled her father's crooked smile, she had practiced that one grin for ever. She now had it perfect. "I don't know! I makes no bloody sense!" she fretted, growing irritated.
Rosie rolled her eyes at her moody cousin. "I'm older than you, dear," she told the frustrated girl, as though she was explaining simple logic to a five-year-old, "Therefore, I can cuss whenever I want. Besides, you're only fourteen. You've still got most of your brain left. You can use it to express your anger in other ways. I'm an elder, thus, my brain is slowly rotting and I can't find better words." She knew this would make her cousin angry. Lily didn't usually like people telling her what to do, especially if her age was a factor in the decision. Still, Rosie's Uncle Harry had asked her to keep an eye out for his youngest daughter, and it wasn't as though Rosie was going to refuse. Thinking this, she took a glance at the page Lily's textbook was open to. "Silencing Charm?" she asked, incredulous, "C'mon Lil, it's easy. Try it on me."
Lily gave her cousin an angry glare as she explained the cussing. She hate it when people told her she was 'too young' or 'not old enough yet'. Rosie knew that bothered her, but that wasn't stopping her was it? She slid the book off the table and laid her head where the book had been seconds before. Her red hair created a curtain around her. "Why did you have to do that!" she asked, anger in her words. She heard her cousin tell her to use the simple charm on her. She didn't reply. "Silencio!" she whispered, aiming her wand at Rosie.
Rosie shook her head, looking sadly at her cousin. "Sorry dear, didn't work," she told the angry girl, her voice a bit hoarse, meaning the spell had had some effect on her. It was strange, to be Silenced. She'd never had that Charm put on her before. In fourth year, they'd used ravens and bullfrogs, as was traditional for the Silencing Charm. "Try, try again," she encouraged the younger girl, her voice patient. She enjoyed helping people with homework. Usually, it was just her friends that she helped. Teddy, Avery, Logan, and sometimes even Zane. Of course, she wasn't past helping her family. James and Vikki sometimes came to her for help as well. Ands he was only too happy to help.
Lily's anger rose as the charm failed to silence her babbling cousin. She hit her left arm on the table. She held her wand tightly in her right, getting ready to 'try, try again' as Rosie had said. "Silencio!" she said again, with more force. Oh how she hated Charms. They just seemed to hate her back. She looked up at her cousin. "Did it work?" she asked in a small voice. She doubted that it did, but she better ask just in case.
Again, Rosie shook her head sadly. "Try more of a swish and flick method than jabbing at me with your wand. It's not as though you want to kill me or anything, after all," Rosie joked, instructing her cousin with her increasingly hoarse voice. Lily was getting better at the spell, as demonstrated by it being difficult for Rosie to talk, but she hadn't yet mastered the art of wandwork yet.
Lily scowled as her second attempt failed, yet again. She felt like giving up, and cussing the damn charm but with Rosie here she couldn't. She tried the 'swish and flick' motion as she whispered, "Silencio!" She looked down, not wanting to know if she had failed yet again. Lily slowly looked up, trying not to break down right there.
Rosie was about to tell the girl she'd failed yet again until there was a tickling sensation in the back of her throat. Her heart jumped. Lily had done it! She tried to exclaim in happiness, but she couldn't speak. Instead, she simply hugged her cousin and cheered silently off to the side. Oh, the joys of tutoring.
Lily watched her cousin. She noted she wasn't speaking. 'I'll have to use this on her more often.' she thought. She grinned. "I did it?!" she asked, unsure why she couldn't trust herself. She felt Rosie's arms around her and laughed. "I think I'm going to have to use this a lot on you. I like the quite." she muttered in Rosie's ear. She knew Rosie would be mad, but so what? She couldn't talk right then. Lily smiled wider. "Erm, thanks Rosie..." she said, her voice not very loud. Rosie was hugging her tightly, cutting off her air. "Rosie. Let. Me. Go." she whispered, panting in her breaths.
Rosie immediately released her cousin from the tight hug she'd been giving her. Still smiling, she grinned at the girl, before gesturing to her mouth, motioning that the girl should take the spell off her, with the countercurse. Unfortunately, she couldn't exactly remember the countercurse at the moment, so she was in pretty deep water.
