"Aww come on Avery. Cheer up," she told him, ruffling his hair before turning back to the books and choosing an interesting-looking one off the shelf, flipping through the yellowing pages as she waited for him to answer her. "Tell me about it. Promise I won't laugh."
Avery lifted his head and looked at Rosie. "You swear?" Avery knew she would laugh, but he thought maybe this idea of his would change the perspective of things everyone else thinks/sees.
Rosie smiled back. "Cross my heart and hope to die," she answered, her voice sing-songy as she recited the line spoken by so many Muggle kindergarteners of their time. "Stick a needle in my eye."
Avery laughed, and then his expression turned serious. "Okay...so here's my idea. If you and I hung out in public, then maybe just maybe some people would have a change of heart. I know it's stupid that I think that Slytherin's and Gryffindor's could possibly get along...it doesn't seem realistic. But, why don't we give it a shot?" Avery looked embarrassed, but he was happy to get it off of his chest. "And plus, I really miss hanging out with you." Avery looked very honest, and sweet. He smiled sweetly at her, and his eyes twinkled.
Rosie tilted her head to the side, thinking about his proposition while a grin spread slowly across her face. After a while, it was her turn to talk. "I don't see why not," she answered, shrugging her shoulders, "Other than the obvious reason that the Death Eaters might start to jinx me wildly if they see me hanging out with you. Corliss put me under the Cruciatus Curse simply for being seen with Destinee." She was worried about his thoughts. New Order members and Death Eaters didn't exactly get along well. And if she was seen hanging out with Avery, she would be the one who was hurt for it.
Avery looked impressed by himself, but then he heard the last part. "Wait, what??" Avery said a little too loud. He looked into Rosie's deep eyes questioning her.
Rosie put her head in her hands shaking it back and forth. She knew she'd said too much. Avery had become awfully protective of her over the years. Sometimes to the extent that Teddy took it, in beating people up because of something they did to her. But usually, it was a more mild form of this protectiveness. Which, in Rosie's opinion, was better. Because then she didn't have to worry about him getting in trouble for her. She looked up at him and began to explain. "I was in the woods with Destinee. We happened to run into each other and got to talking. Of course, something I mentioned happened to make the Fox girl cry, so I hugged her and tried to cheer her up," she glanced at him before continuing. "In walks Corliss, who pulls out her wand and starts hurling Unforgivables at me. One of which found their mark."
Avery listened to Rosie's story with a patient heart. Corliss may have used Unforgivables on Rosie...but the question was if Rosie had used any curses on Corliss. He looked at her, wondering if he should ask his question. He decided it would be better to wait a little while. He started off with an easy NO DUH question. "Oh... ummm your not a big fan of Corliss are you?" Avery asked Rosie. He looked at her, his dark breath taking blue eyes piercing into hers. He sat just staring at her waiting for an answer.
Rosie looked questioningly at Avery. She shook her head angrily, before turning her body half away from him and leaning against the bookshelf on one side of the Restricted Section, her eyes searching the other bookshelves for an interesting read. "You just don't get it, do you?" she asked, turning to look at him, her eyebrows furrowed and her head shaking back and forth. "I got an Unforgivable put on me three times that day. And Corliss, not a once. And of course, I doubt you've ever had one put on you, because after all, you're a Slytherin, and thus better than the rest of us, right?" Rosie was simply getting fed up with the way things worked in this school. Hardly any of the Slytherins knew what it was like to have the Cruciatus Curse put on you, because, after all, most of the New Order members wouldn't ever use it on another living being. But that hardly seemed fair as the Death Eaters were always the ones that deserved it.

Avery couldn't believe his eyes. Rosie was getting mad at him. She never got mad at him! She was hardly ever mad around him for that matter. "Rosie...you know that I'm...different. I have never used an Unforgivable curse on a human bean...I may have on some bugs to practice on, but other than than that I haven't used one. Nor do I plan to. I've never had one put on me either, ok? And, I'm not better than you. I'm not better than anyone. In my mind we're all the same. Some people are less mature than us though." Avery smirked at his last statement. "Rosie, no one in the whole wide wizarding world deserves to have a Unforgivable curse put on them, understand? Not even the most horrible Slytherins deserve it." Avery said this with confidence and poise.
Rosie shook her head. "I know that," she answered quickly, angry at herself for letting her usually non-existent temper fly off the handle at one of her closest friends. However, when she heard that he practiced on bugs, she let loose again. "You liar! If you're never going to use it then there really is no point using it on an innocent creature! NOTHING deserves the Cruciatus Curse, either animal or human. And if you don't believe in that shit about Purebloods being better then the rest of us half-breeds and muggle-borns then why on EARTH are you all chummy with the Death Eaters?!"
Avery's eye's bugged out, and his mouth dropped. He tried to bring his mouth back up to normal position, but it felt like 500 pounds. Rosie was getting really mad. No she was past mad, she was furious. He was going to have to calm her down.
"Look, Rosie..." Avery began not completely knowing where he was going with this. He continued, "I'm a Slytherin...and they expect things out of me. As do Gryffindors in you. I don't know why there are so many huge differences in Slytherin's and Gryffindor's. I wish I could erase all those unforgivable curse I used in the past...but, I can't. To tell you the truth, I hated watching them be torchered. It was even harder when I was the one producing the torcher to them. I had to suck up my inner pain, and I had to act like it didn't pain me to watch it. It was extremely hard to go through it, but I did. i feel horrible about it now...and I don't know what else to say to you besides...forgive me Rosie. Please forgive me."
Avery looked into Rosie's eyes...his dark blue ones showed hurt in them. You didn't have to look deep into them to see the hurt...it was right there. Avery swallowed the big lump in his throat, and hoped that Rosie would forgive him.
Rosie narrowed her eyes, searching his face for every scrap of remorse that she could find, before putting her hands on her hips and sighing. "Promise you'll never use them again," she ordered him, her voice sounding more authoritative than she would have liked. Of course, she couldn't look past the fact that he'd tortured living creatures. But she had to ignore it for the time being. However, something else was bugging her as well. "You don't HAVE to do anything. You could have joined the New Order if you wanted to. I mean, you'd probably be in danger, but at least you'd be doing the right thing."
Avery took a deep breath, and began his promise, "I promise, Rosie. I wont use another one ever again." If Avery ever broke his promise to Rosie, it would start eating him up inside out. He would never be able to let her down. Not this time at least.
Avery's jaw clenched when he heard what Rosie said. His breathing tightened, and he looked away from Rosie. He hated it when someone in the DE or someone in the New Order wanted him to join their side. He didn't want to be involved in any of it. He was though, he couldn't help it. Even though he wasn't on the DE's side or the New Order's side he was involved.
"Look, Rosie...I know you want me to join the New Order...but, I can't, and you know that...at least you should."
Rosie sighed heavily when she heard what he'd said. She knew he didn't want to be involved. He'd confided in her long ago, in fact, the day that he'd joined the Death Eaters. She knew that he was torn, that he would rather not be involved in this fight, but honestly, what was he afraid of? Sure, he could get killed, but if he went with the Death Eaters, then tons more people would be hurt and degraded. "Look, Avery, I know you don't want to be involved in either side, but unfortunately, you are. And while you're involved, I don't see why you can't join the New Order."
