Zane just smiled, not really hearing any of the whispers in the room. He just looked at Lily, wishing he could read her thoughts right that moment. As Lily mentioned the stalker girls, the sudden quiet was smashed by a wall of sound that had to be the rest of the common room. He hadn't been paying any attention to anyone besides Lily. Now realising that he hadn't stopped looking at her for two minutes, he looked away with an embarassed smile. "I don't mind, they'll just go and find some other Quidditch player to hero-worship..."like James. That last thought focused his mind some what. Here he was, sat holding Lily's hand, what would James think? I know he definately wouldn't be happy about it. Zane nodded in response before smiling once more. Wow she is really pretty. Why didn't I see this before? Maybe because I just saw her as my best friend. How things change... "No but thanks Lils," he said quietly, trying not to think about what would have happened if they hadn't intervened. He looked into her green eyes, just listening to the fire crackling next to them.
Smiling at Zane's comment about the stalker girls, Lily wondered who would have the problem of the girls next. Teddy or James probably. she confirmed. She could tell that Zane was totally and completely unaware of the other students listening in on their conversation. It made her smile to think that he was this caught up with her. Wow! I really think this might work! Does he know how cute he looks right now? That smile was totally priceless! He doesn't have to be sorry for looking at me.... She was totally lost in his eyes now, not wanting this moment to ever end. She was trying to hold in her thoughts, struggling with the small task actually. He had her complete attention now. She was totally in a moment of total awe that this amazing person was looking at her the way Zane was. "You know something...." she said, wondering what would happen if she went on with her sentence. Feeling that the next few things she would say might possible change things for the better, she went on. "I think I really like this. I think I really like you, well, I know I really like you. I don't want this to end. My heart flops every time you look at me and say my name. I can't get you off my mind." she said slowly, trying hard not to look into his brown eyes. Of course, she failed and found herself lost in those dreamy eyes of his, yet again. "I know I shouldn't have told you this or what I'm going to say next, but this just feels so... So, right. Y'know?" Noticing that her hand was still facing down, Lily moved her hand so that the back of it was pressed against the smooth black leather of the chair. She twined her smaller fingers through Zane's, a smile - not a Lily smile I might add - spread over her lips. "I'm sorry. I really should learn how to keep my mouth shut. It just..... There I go again!" she said, her cheeks flaming a little at her total blabbing moment. No, Lily didn't blab often, but when the boy of her freaking dreams was holding her hand! She felt she had the right to blab a tiny bit.

He glanced into the flames once more, watching the remains of an old Daily Prophet crumble into ash, the picture on the front no longer recognisible. It had been a piece to do with the ministry, not that many people had bothered to read it. Another sheet flew from across the room and landed on top of the fire. The moving picture showed a disgruntled looking shopkeeper pointing at his shop and then back at the camera, whatever it was, it looked funny. The headline contained the words, shopkeeper shames shoe shine, sounds like a thrilling read. As the paper caught and the flame spread across the sheet, the picture began to move slower and slower until it had stopped completely, before it was consumed by the fire. Fire had always been something that had fascinated Zane, not in a pyromaniac way, but just in small way. Probably something from his childhood maybe.
He turned back and met Lily's eyes once more. As Lily began to speak, he smiled slightly and listened expectingly as she paused for thought. When she had finished, Zane said, "Lily, I..." he paused trying to find the right words, "I know what you mean, it just seems so natural... I like you Lily, I," he paused again with another embarassed smile, "I think you're really pretty. I've always thought so but never said anything..." He let his words sink in, smiling as he felt Lily's fingers twined around his own.

James already wasn't in the greatest mood. He had just spent an hour and a half struggling on a potions essay which he had been forced to give up. Then he ran into some DE members who were plotting something. Then to top it all off he was two minutes late for curfew and Duros caught him and gave him yet another detention. He nudged open the portrait hole and climbed in scanning the commen room for someone who could calm him when he spotted Zane and Lily. He was about to walk over to them when he realised how close they were physically. He scowled when he saw that their hans were intertwined. He walked towards them and said angrily "What are you doing!"
A big smile spread across the small girl's face as she heard Zane. "Thank you, Zane. I.... I know what your saying. I'm just a little caught up in the moment." she said, giving him a light hearted wink to ease the tension. She had totally put James from her mind after a bit, not wanting her dream day to crash and burn with thoughts of her overprotective brother. Being so completly caught up in the moment, not seeing or hearing anyone else, Lily was brought back to reality when the too familiar voice of her brother wrecked the perfect scene. She had a feeling Zane would yank his hand away from hers the second James appered. So, being the smart shortie she was, she kept a firm but gently hold on his hand. She looked up at her brother, a look of complete peace covered with a perfect nonchalant smile. "Well, dear brother, this is called holding hands. I'm not sure if you ever started here before snooging a girl, but its rather nice. If you don't mind. You interrupted a very nice conversation. Please leave. Now, James." she said, her voice betraying her calm expression. No, she didn't sound worried, not in the least bit. She sounded angry, and hell yes she was. Her brother had no right, no right what so ever, to barge in on her happy night. She smiled at Zane, looking away from her brother. "As I was saying, before we were so rudely interrupted, I think your very handsom. I just never voiced it because of a minro conflict of elder siblings who have no right to try and control their sisters." she said, sending her brother a light smirk

James scowled from his little sister down to the hand that was intertwined with his best friends. He looked up at Zane unable to believe that he would do something like this. "Lily, I was just minding my own business until now, and for your information, I do hold hands!" This was true, he had held hands with Heather all the time. He felt the anger boil about everything. "Thought you were supposed to be my friend." He said angrily to Zane.

Zane simply smiled, before moving a stary piece of hair that had fallen across Lily's face, "there, I can see you properly now." He looked at Lily for a few seconds until an all too familiar voice reached his ears, one of the people they had been talking about previously. James...what do we do now? He felt Lily hold on to his hand tightly, he smiled at her once more before looking up into the eyes of James. Zane let Lily finish and was just about to speak when he heard James say something about being his friend. "James? I am your friend." He paused thinking back to a conversation they had had earlier in the year, where Zane had questioned James' friendship, looks like the tables have turned. He looked from James to Lily and back again, before turning his attention back to Lily as she began to speak once more. Oh so that's what they were talking about in the kitchens...
"James! Why don't you ever listen! You promised Teddy and me that you would not spazz out every time you saw me with a boy! You can't just go back on your word!" she said, her eyes rimmed with tears she fought not to shed. She shook her head at her brother, a tear sliding down her cheek. "For once, I get what I've worked and waited for. Then you... You come and kill me night. Don't you see, James? See how long I've waited for this? See what your doing? You question Zane's friendship? Why?" she said, holding on tight to her crush's hand. She looked away from her brother, hoping that Zane wouldn't be too freaked out by her mini speech. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't be doing this." Her voice was shaky, close to breaking. She thought back to the flash of white hot burning that she had felt when Zane pushed a stray hair from her face. She tried to smile, but the feeling of her heart being ripped in two wasn't letting up. She wanted Zane to hold her, tell her everything was going to be ok. She knew it wouldn't happen. Zane wouldn't do that with James watching the semi-couple like a hawk. "James, leave. I don't want to feel like this anymore. Can't you see your hurting me?" she said, trying to keep her hand from shaking in Zane's. She looked away from the boys, tears streaking down her face. Thats just great! Good thing I don't get all red and blochy. It would be Lily to thank the heavens for not turning red while crying. She felt her hand being to shake softly. She looked up through her lashes at Zane, tears staining her purple shorts.

James scowled at them both "Lily I know I promised you that, but it's hard. And it's especially hard when it's my best friend who knows what I am like with my sister." He aimed the last part at Zane. He couldn't believe that he would ever do that to him. Zane knew what he was like with the other guys.
He scowled taking a deep breath to try to calm himself. He listened to the rest of Lily's speech and said "Well I question Zane's friendship because the Zane I know would never have done this, I know that you have waited ages for this, I just didn't expect to come in here and see that."

Zane just listened carefully as Lily spilled out her feelings to James. He looked down, almost ashamed as James laid the blame on him. He paused, not really knowing how to answer. Ok so James isn't taking it well, not well at all in fact. Yes I feel guilty, but why should I? He's known for longer than I have that Lily liked me, so surely he might have thought out what might happen, but obviously not. He held Lily's hand tightly, trying to reassure her. He spoke quietly so that only James and Lily could hear, " well why don't you go out with my sister? Then we're equal..." He paused waiting for the angry outburst that would no doubt follow. The last time Zane and James had had an argument had been last Christmas, and yes this time it was also over a girl. A Christmas Party, too much firewhiskey, and a kiss under the mistletoe with Zoey Abercrombie that James just happened to see. Here we go again...
Taking a deep breath, Lily prepared herself for the things she needed to voice. "James, I konw. I know that your protective. I know you don't want to see me get hurt, but thats exactly what your doing to me. YOu know that I love you. I know you love me, but brother, sometimes you have to give it up and go on with your life. You can't force me to do anything I don't want to do!" she said, her voice so low she knew no one else would hear. She felt Zane's hand tighten around her own and smiled in responce. Not knowing what else to do, Lily reached out, touching her warm hand to Zane's chin. She lifted it up gently, not wanting to see him sad. "You have no need to be sorry. This is all my fault. Relax, Zaners." she whispered, slowly letting her hand fall from his face. "James..... I like Zane, I think he might possibly like me back, so can you just, please, give it a rest?" she pleaded.

James scowled and said, "Zane, number 1 you don't love her like I love Lils. I care about her so much and you hate your sister. 2, If I knew you felt protective about your sister I would never jepodise our friendship for her and 3, honestly I would never go out with her." he practically shouted. He also remembered the last time that they had fought and scowled. He turned to lily and shook his head "I'm sorry Lils if I am hurting you, I don't mean too. It's just I had thought that my day couldn't get any worse, but it seems that I was wrong."

Zane smiled slightly until he heard James' response. Well of course he hadn't expected it to be the most polite conversation in history. He listened carefully keeping his temper under control, which was proving more difficult than he had imagined. Most people had never seen Zane lose it, and he hoped they never would, he had a temper to match his sister's, but of course he had a lot more self control. In fact, Zane had never lost his temper at Hogwarts. Yes he had come close several times, but an all night Quidditch practise soon fixed everything. Now he was in two minds, whether to stay and try to keep his temper under control, or, walk out of the door and hopefully difuse the situation. Finally he spoke quietly, in contrast to James' shout, "Look James, I don't want to argue, but you just have to accept that you can't control Lily's life forever." He looked towards the door, still deliberating whether he should just leave.
Lily held in a laugh as Zane proposed James date Kianthra. She looked at her brother watching him with a bit of anger in her normally calm eyes. She waited, slowly growing impatient as he went on and on. Lily was sure that this would end any chance she had with Zane. Who in their right mind would want to be with soemone that had an overprotective brother that freaked every time he saw his sister with a boy? No one. No one at all! Scowling at her brother, Lily listened to Zane, noticing that he must be thinking about something more important. "Zane is right, as was Ted when he said exactly the same thing! You can't tell me what to do and you can't make me do anything. Chill and let it go or leave." she said, her voice sounding much like their mother's when she wanted something done that second. She saw Zane's gaze drift to the door. Oh Merlin no. James has done it now. It Zane walk out of the door, I'll whip James to the groud so fast no one will know what heppened.

James scowled at Zane. He knew that htis was unfair to lily, but at the moment he didn't care. He looked round at Lily and said "What are you going to do when he leaves for his big debut? I don't want you coming crying to me." He looked at them both trying to be angry but couldn't. He knew that if he didn't walk away now then Lily would never forgive him so he scowled again and walked over to join Teddy.
